The date July 10 holds a special place for Fairfax County taxpayers. Until this date, all the individual income taxes paid by Fairfax County taxpayers to the Commonwealth of Virginia are actually used to provide services for people outside of Fairfax County.
Only after July 10–the 191st day of the year–will the state income tax revenues contributed by Fairfax County taxpayers actually get used for state and local public services in Fairfax County.
In total, Fairfax County taxpayers annually contribute nearly 4 billion dollars to the Commonwealth treasury. Yet, 52% of income taxes contributed by Fairfax taxpayers is either given to other counties and cities in the Commonwealth in the form of intergovernmental transfers (1.7 billion dollars) or is used to fund state-level public services outside Fairfax County (0.4 billion dollars).
The relevant computations (in Excel) are based on the latest data available from official sources, including the Virginia Department of Taxation and the Virginia Auditor of Public Accounts.
